Auburn Vice President Steve Stapleton told politicians the company was prepared to deal with the city’s other concerns during the typical process of building a new subdivision, and urged politicians not to ” “sub-designate” the land as an urban reserve.

But city staff said the property is unlikely to get the green light for development until a broader review and larger plans for the area are in place. This process is called a secondary plan.

“A secondary plan isn’t just about land use, transportation and road connections and services, it’s really about defining the character of a community, the community structure and all the other related policies that are really important. for the formation of a district. , especially when you look at the council’s recent statement on a climate emergency and how we might want to do growth differently, ”Paul Yeoman, director of town hall development services, told politicians.

Yet politicians have spoken at length about the interest in the location of a primary school and the need for more housing in London.

He was supported by Ward 8 Coun. Steve Lehman, but everyone else voted against the motion.

The staff recommendation was approved, 4-2, with Holder and Lehman opposing and Councilors Steve Hillier, Anna Hopkins, Shawn Lewis and Phil Squire in favor.

Deputy Mayor Josh Morgan, who represents the region, joined the meeting and encouraged his colleagues to think about the bigger picture when it comes to the development of the Northwest.

“I have very little interest in planning this as a small piece of a puzzle,” he said. “This block is actually a very small piece of what might be the larger planned area.”
