Markel International names leader of its wholesale division

Markel International has hired Andrew McMellin (pictured above) as general manager of its wholesale division, effective January 17 and subject to regulatory approval.

Based in London, McMellin will report to Simon Wilson, President of Markel International. In his new role, McMellin will leverage his market knowledge and long-standing relationships to help Markel grow its Lloyd’s platform and presence in other key specialty wholesale markets. McMellin will also use his operational experience to support systems and process simplification as Markel strives to improve the experience for its brokers and clients.

McMellin has over 30 years of specialty insurance experience, and he comes from Pioneer Underwriters, where he was CEO. Prior to that, he was CEO for UK and Ireland at XL Catlin. In these roles, he managed multi-billion dollar portfolios of specialty product lines and helped accelerate growth in new and existing markets, including Asia.

The move is part of a concerted effort to establish market leadership in its international wholesale operations, said Markel.

“Andrew brings a wealth of experience and connections that will get him started here at Markel,” Wilson said. “His ambitious spirit matches ours, and I have no doubts that he will play a leading role in helping Markel grow our international operations. “
