Barclays confirms closure of six banks in Wales: full list of affected branches

A major UK bank is set to close nearly 50 of its branches in early 2022, including six in Wales.

Barclays has confirmed that 48 of its branches across the UK will close permanently, largely due to changes in customer banking habits.

In Wales, the bank is preparing to close its sites in Caernarfon, Chepstow, Gorseinon, Monmouth, Porthmadog and Port Talbot.

The news comes as some Barclays customers have expressed disappointment on social media after receiving a letter from the bank announcing its closure.

A client of Barclays Port Talbot wrote that she had been a client of the branch for several years and that it would be “a shame” to see it shut down permanently.

Which Barclays banks in Wales will close and when will they close permanently?

In a report posted on its website, Barclays confirmed that its branches in Caernarfon, Chepstow, Gorseinon, Monmouth, Porthmadog and Port Talbot Station Road were among those due to close permanently in 2022.

Caernarfon

Barclays Bank’s Caernarfon branch will close on Friday February 18, 2022, which has upset many customers.

As NorthWalesLive reports, Plaid Cymru Arfon MP Hywel Williams wrote to the bank’s chief executive urging him to reconsider his decision. Mr Williams wrote: “As you are no doubt aware, the Barclays branch in Caernarfon has long been a mainstay of the local main street, providing essential banking services to the local community and businesses.

“I am therefore deeply concerned about your bank’s decision to close its local branch as this will increase banking exclusion, especially for the elderly and rural communities, and undermine the local economy.”

Customers have been advised that their nearest branches, when the Caernarfon site closes, will be nine miles at 273 High Street, Bangor, and 14 miles at 24 Church Street, Llangefni.

Barclays says the main reasons it will close the Caernarfon branch are:

  • The number of over-the-counter transactions declined in the two years leading up to March 2020 and in addition, 81% of branch customers also use other means to do their banking, such as online and over the phone.
  • Customers using other means of banking have increased by 14% since 2015
  • In the past 12 months, 36% of customers at this branch used branches nearby
  • We have identified that only 98 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking operations.

Chepstow

The Chepstow branch will close on Friday February 4, 2022.

After it closes, the nearest Barclays branch for local customers will be 13 miles at 1 High Street in Westbury-on-Trym and 16 miles at 14 Commercial Street, Newport. Customers will also be able to perform certain banking services at their local post office on Welsh Street, Chepstow.

Barclays says it decided to close this branch because:

  • The number of over-the-counter transactions declined in the two years leading up to March 2020 and in addition, 87% of branch customers also use other means to do their banking, such as online and over the phone.
  • Customers using other means of banking have increased 12% since 2015
  • In the past 12 months, 11% of customers at this branch used branches nearby
  • We have identified that only 91 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking operations.

Alternatively, customers will be able to perform certain banking services at their local post office at Bank Place, Porthmadog.
